74/365 History

Today was spent visiting and talking to my Grandparents and my Father about my family history and looking at old newspapers clippings.

Since watching Who Do You Think You Are, I got to thinking about how little I really know about my family history. When I asked my Grandmother about her family, she pulled out 2 books full of information on both sides of her family. I am really excited to get to read it. Here are 2 pictures I found...

This is a picture of my Great Grandfather.

And this is a picture of his mother, my Great Great Grandmother.

I am thinking about trying out ancestry.com to see if I can learn more. Has anyone had any experience with it?

How awesome is that! I have never personally tried that site but I have heard people who have had lots of luck. My Dad's side of the family is really not well documented and I know he's been wanting to get something together. So if you use ancestry.com let me know. I might have to think about doing something like that for his birthday. :)

How exciting! I love genealogy and have done a lot of work on my family. My father passed away 5 years ago and left his legacy, his written life story. I'm so glad he did. It gave us a glimpse of him as a young child and young adult. Have fun.

Years ago my in laws came across a diary which a great grandfather had written during his years of immigration from Belgium to Argentina. He and several families had left to find a better life. All they found was a life of slavery on farms. They encounter plenty of illness with lead to many deaths and years later they worked their way back to their homeland of Belgium. It was so interesting to read the history of this family.

So glad you found some of your history. How wonderful someone thought to save the newspapers.

I like these old photos and papers. I am barely getting started with Famiy history myself.

That is awesome that you have all that information at your fingertips!
I've never tried ancestry.com, but my cousin did a very extensive geneology project for a college class and used it-- she found awesome stuff!

I've never used ancestry.com, but I just might play around with it and see what I can come up with. Now that both my parents are gone, I have this overwhelming urge to find out more about them. It's funny how we take them for granted when they're hear and just figure we'll have all the time in the world to write down all those little stories they share with us in passing, or that we'll be able to remember them when they're gone. I also learned several things about my Mom after she passed when relatives told me stories about her that I had never heard before. What I wouldn't give for one more day with each of them just to ask a thousand questions....even 20 would be nice.
